GEORGE HENRY HARLOW (CIRCLE) 1787-1819 PORTRAIT OF A LADY C1815

A very attractive oil portrait of a beautiful young lady in the flamboyant style of circa 1815. It is in fine condition and is relined. It is in an original frame of the period.

WILLIAM TURNER (FE 1812 - 1859) PORTRAIT OF TWO SISTERS

This outstanding portrait of two sisters was painted by William Turner, who exhibited 20 works at the RA in 1839. It is signed and dated.
It is in superb conditin and in an 18th cent carved frame.

A fine and striking portrait thought to be Mrs Judith Gregge-Hopwood. It has been attributed to an artist close to Joesph Wright of Derby and is in very fine condition.

NORMAN HEPPLE PRP RA (1908-1990) PORTRAIT OF A LADY 1983

A prominent 20thc portrait painter and President of the Royal Society of Portraitists. He painted HM The Queen, Her late Majesty The Queen Mother, Prince Philip and Prince Charles amongst other. It is fair to comment that these are amongst the best portraits of the Royal Family. This fine portrait of an unknown lady is signed and dated 1983.

FRENCH SCHOOL PORTRAIT OF THE 8TH DUC DE LA FORCE c1835

An imposing portrait of a distinguished Napoleonic officer and subsequent general in King Louis XVIII restoration army, Louis Joseph Nompar de Caumont was Commandant at Montrauban at the time of the portrait. His descendant, the 14th Duc, now lives in Portugal and has extensive wine interests.

SIR JOHN BAPTISTE MEDINA (ATTRIBUTED) (1659-1710) PORTRAIT OF GEORGE KEITH, 7TH EARL OF MARISCHAL (1620-1694) c1690

An outstanding portrait attributed by Sotheby’s to Sir John Medina, the pre-eminent Scottish portraitist of the time. It depicts him in full armour. The Earl was imprisoned by Cromwell after the battle of Worcester. At the Restoration he played a prominent part in the first ceremonial opening of Parliament by King Charles II. Provenance: The Elphinstone Family Trust.

HENRY CAMPOTOSTO (c1850-1910) PORTRAIT OF PRINCESS ALEXANDRA c1885

This lovely portrait of Princess Alexandra when Princess of Wales is surrounded with roses to reflect her love for this flower - subsequently, she founded Alexander Rose Day in 1912. Campotosto was a Belgian artist who became anglicised, living for many years with his sister Octavia, a fellow artist, in Bletchingly. The portrait is signed and dated 1885.

MARGARET SARAH CARPENTER (ATTRIBUTED) (1793-1872) PORTRAIT OF A LADY c1825

Perhaps one of the most important women artists of the 19th century, Sarah Carpenter followed the tradition and technique of Sir Thomas Lawrence in her portrait work. This lovely portrait of a striking looking lady has all her characteristics, particularly her fondness for featuring velvet in sitter’s gowns.

JOHN OPIE (ATTRIBUTED) (1761-1807) PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG LADY c1800

An attractive portrait of a young lady whose attribution to Opie was assisted by Mr Kitson, Keeper of British Art at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool. The dark background of the work is tempered by a small loosely worked landscape to the side, a technique which Opie employed in many of his portraits of young women.

SIR JOHN WATSON GORDON RA PRSA (1759-1864) PORTRAIT OF LADY MACKENZIE c1850

A lovely portrait of a great beauty, Lady Louisa Alexandrina Mackenzie, who married Sir Robert Mackenzie in1846. Sir John also painted her three children in the late 1850s
Sir John Watson Gordon was the pre-eminent Scottish portrait painter of the mid 1900s and became President of the Royal Scottish Academy.

SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (ATTRIBUTED) (1769-1830) PORTRAIT OF A LADY OF THE MILNER FAMILY (PROBABLY SELINA MILNER) c1720

A fine, unfinished, portrait (one of some 150 found unfinished in his studio on his untimely death) portrait of a lady of the Milner family, probably Selina. Lawrence was famous for speedily capturing an uncanny likeness in his work. He painted Diana Milner, the sitter’s mother, in 1790. There is a striking likeness between the two portraits even though Selina’s is unfinished. Provenance: The Milner family.

JOHN HOPPNER RA (1758-1810) PORTRAIT OF JOHN PENN c1805

This magnificent portrait, in its original Regency frame, is of John Penn, grandson of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. The provenance of this work is known throughout it’s life. It was painted circa 1805 to grace Pennsylvania Castle in Dorset when it was built by John Penn who had just returned from America. It was recorded in 1877 as part of the inventory of the castle when it was sold by his nephew. Subsequently, it appeared in the Koedler Gallery, New York, then in the Woolworth sale in 1924 and in the Rockefeller sale in 1947. The Columbus Museum in Ohio sold it to benefit its acquisition fund.

A most attractive portrait combining a child with a dog, an appealing mix. The subject and provenance is unknown, though the style and colouring is typical of Hoppner. It is thus only attributed to Hoppner’s circle.

THOMAS BEACH (ATTRIBUTED) (1738-1806) PORTRAIT OF A LADY c1780

This striking portrait of an unknown lady is typical of Beech’s style, particularly in the treatment of the hair and the dress. He is known for his strong likenesses, and this portrait is certainly that. It‘s provenance is not known.

TILLY KETTLE (1734-1786) PORTRAIT OF MARY GIBBONS (NEE MOSELEY) c1769

A beautiful and tranquil portrait of Mary Gibbons (nee Moseley) of Leeton Hall, Near Shrewsbury. Kettle was much influenced by Reynolds and practiced in the midlands, where this portrait was executed, before going to India to seek his fortune painting.nabobs including Warren Hastings. On return to England his business failed and, sadly, trying to recoup his fortune, he died of fever at Aleppo on the way back to India. Fully attributed by Messrs Christies.

NATHANIEL HONE RA (1718-1784) PORTRAIT OF A LADY THOUGHT TO BE MRS STRUTT c1770

A very fine portrait painted in the transitional period between Hone as a miniaturist and him as a full scale oil painter. The face is painted in stipple work and the rest in a conventional oil technique.
In his time he was as popular as Reynolds but fell out with him when he parodied Reynolds in paint suggesting an improper relationship between Reynolds and Angelica Kauffmann. Reynolds never forgave him and did his best to ruin his practice. Fully attributed by Messrs Christies.

THOMAS HUDSON (1701-1779) PORTRAIT OF LADY ANNE DENISON c1760

A magnificent., almost full length, portrait of the wife of Sir Thomas Denison, a judge of the King’s Bench by Thomas Hudson.
Hudson taught Sir Joshua Reynolds and at the time was considered to be one of the finest portraitists. He also painted Lady Denison’s niece, Miss Denison, later Mrs Jonathan Midgley of Beverly, Yorkshire. Fully attributed by Messrs Sothebys.

HENRY PICKERING (c1700-1771) PORTRAIT OF AN ELDERLY LADY 1769

A superbly painted portrait, signed and dated 1769, of an elderly lady of great character. The treatment of the dress is masterly and compares well with a similar portrait of the same period in the Tate Gallery.

MARY BEALE(ATTRIBUTED) (1633-1691) PORTRAIT OF MARY(MOLL) DAVIES c1680

A good portrait by this popular artist of Mary(Moll) Davies, a mistress of King Charles II and mother of Mary Tudor, later Countess of Derwentwater. Moll lost her looks in her 30s, as is evident in this portrait painted when she was about 35. Attributed by Messrs Christies.
