NORMAN HEPPLE PRP RA (1908-1990) PORTRAIT OF A LADY 1983
A prominent 20thc portrait painter and President of the Royal Society of Portraitists. He painted HM The Queen, Her late Majesty The Queen Mother, Prince Philip and Prince Charles amongst other. It is fair to comment that these are amongst the best portraits of the Royal Family. This fine portrait of an unknown lady is signed and dated 1983.

FRENCH SCHOOL PORTRAIT OF THE 8TH DUC DE LA FORCE c1835
An imposing portrait of a distinguished Napoleonic officer and subsequent general in King Louis XVIII restoration army, Louis Joseph Nompar de Caumont was Commandant at Montrauban at the time of the portrait. His descendant, the 14th Duc, now lives in Portugal and has extensive wine interests.

This lovely portrait of Princess Alexandra when Princess of Wales is surrounded with roses to reflect her love for this flower - subsequently, she founded Alexander Rose Day in 1912. Campotosto was a Belgian artist who became anglicised, living for many years with his sister Octavia, a fellow artist, in Bletchingly. The portrait is signed and dated 1885.

Perhaps one of the most important women artists of the 19th century, Sarah Carpenter followed the tradition and technique of Sir Thomas Lawrence in her portrait work. An attractive portrait of a young lady whose attribution to Opie was assisted by Mr Kitson, Keeper of British Art at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool. The dark background of the work is tempered by a small loosely worked landscape to the side, a technique which Opie employed in many of his portraits of young women.

Sir John Watson Gordon was the pre-eminent Scottish portrait painter of the mid 1900s and became President of the Royal Scottish Academy.

JOHN HOPPNER RA (1758-1810) PORTRAIT OF JOHN PENN c1805
This magnificent portrait, in its original Regency frame, is of John Penn, grandson of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. The provenance of this work is known throughout it’s life. It was painted circa 1805 to grace Pennsylvania Castle in Dorset when it was built by John Penn who had just returned from America. It was recorded in 1877 as part of the inventory of the castle when it was sold by his nephew. Subsequently, it appeared in the Koedler Gallery, New York, then in the Woolworth sale in 1924 and in the Rockefeller sale in 1947. The Columbus Museum in Ohio sold it to benefit its acquisition fund.

This striking portrait of an unknown lady is typical of Beech’s style, particularly in the treatment of the hair and the dress. He is known for his strong likenesses, and this portrait is certainly that. It‘s provenance is not known.

TILLY KETTLE (1734-1786) PORTRAIT OF MARY GIBBONS (NEE MOSELEY) c1769
A beautiful and tranquil portrait of Mary Gibbons (nee Moseley) of Leeton Hall, Near Shrewsbury. Kettle was much influenced by Reynolds and practiced in the midlands, where this portrait was executed, before going to India to seek his fortune painting.nabobs including Warren Hastings. On return to England his business failed and, sadly, trying to recoup his fortune, he died of fever at Aleppo on the way back to India. Fully attributed by Messrs Christies.

NATHANIEL HONE RA (1718-1784) PORTRAIT OF A LADY THOUGHT TO BE MRS STRUTT c1770
A very fine portrait painted in the transitional period between Hone as a miniaturist and him as a full scale oil painter. The face is painted in stipple work and the rest in a conventional oil technique.
In his time he was as popular as Reynolds but fell out with him when he parodied Reynolds in paint suggesting an improper relationship between Reynolds and Angelica Kauffmann. Reynolds never forgave him and did his best to ruin his practice. Fully attributed by Messrs Christies.

THOMAS HUDSON (1701-1779) PORTRAIT OF LADY ANNE DENISON c1760
A magnificent., almost full length, portrait of the wife of Sir Thomas Denison, a judge of the King’s Bench by Thomas Hudson.
Hudson taught Sir Joshua Reynolds and at the time was considered to be one of the finest portraitists. He also painted Lady Denison’s niece, Miss Denison, later Mrs Jonathan Midgley of Beverly, Yorkshire. Fully attributed by Messrs Sothebys.

MARY BEALE(ATTRIBUTED) (1633-1691) PORTRAIT OF MARY(MOLL) DAVIES c1680
A good portrait by this popular artist of Mary(Moll) Davies, a mistress of King Charles II and mother of Mary Tudor, later Countess of Derwentwater. Moll lost her looks in her 30s, as is evident in this portrait painted when she was about 35. Attributed by Messrs Christies.
